My Story
I spent the weekend I was supposed to teach during my breaks trying to find a practice that could do further tests. My gynecologist at the time was so panicked on the phone that she unsettled me, and I wanted to find out what was going on as quickly as possible! What I didn't know at the time was that "normal" Pap tests are unreliable! With a sensitivity of 20-35 percent, they can hardly be considered an accurate result. That's why we hear from many older women that they've had an abnormal Pap test before, but then everything turned out fine. Because the reliability is just terrible! Conversely, that means we also miss many real results meaning a cell changement, precisely because of this unreliability. And that's what happened to me. The year before, I had a normal result—I thought! And suddenly I got the message: Pap4a! A precursor to cancer. You have to take a deep breath. (For more detailed information on the findings and what they mean, please see below.)
And here I was after this weekend, with an appointment for a colposcopy – a close examination of my cervix. They look under a microscope to see if any changes are visible. BUT – the appointment wasn't for another two weeks, which felt like torture when you don't know what is going on. On top of that, the lady on the phone was extremely unpleasant and made me feel like I was just a number annoying her. It all felt wrong!
I spent the next few days researching... for answers, for someone who could help me, for a straw to grab in these depressing times. And there she was: Dr. Alexandra Coumbos. A specialist in gynecology and obstetrics—but as I would learn over the next few weeks and months, a HUMAN BEING who cares AND knows what she's doing! She has been researching at the Charité Berlin for over 20 years and is committed to improving early detection of cervical cancer.
So there I was, standing there in the practice like a miserable heap, and Dr. Coumbos met me exactly where I needed it. With compassion, clarity, and all the information I needed for a concrete course of action. She explained to me that cervical cancer usually develops slowly, so there was no reason to panic; we could proceed calmly and diligently. But it also became clear that this was the reason for a different Pap test! One that doesn't OVERLOOK what's actually going on for years, until it's possibly too late. Because if the cell changes are detected early, a lot can be done conservatively! But if it's missed, as it is the case with so many women, there's no time to proceed conservatively. So many (unnecessary) conizations are performed every year - cutting away part of the cervix, which leads to many premature births - that could be avoided if more doctors knew about the new test - the S-Pap.
First of all, an S-Pap was done that very day – an advanced test option in which the cells are not "smeared" onto the slide, but are dissolved in liquid so they can be seen more clearly – thus increasing the sensitivity to 91%. A day later, Dr. Coumbos called me and confirmed that yes, it was Pap4a – we need to act. I also had a positive HPV test – meaning the human papillomavirus had taken root in my body. The virus is often absorbed and then eliminated by the body on its own if our immune system is strong enough. If this isn't the case, it stays and can cause cellular changes. The cells of the cervix aren't happy – they don't receive enough oxygen and are also irritated by the associated inflammation. This is usually the process that manifests as Pap3. And unfortunately, many doctors still say "wait and see" instead of taking action. Conventional medicine does not know of any antiviral remedies that can be used in this case – but medicine, and by this I mean natural medicine, which should always be the first step, has a lot at its disposal.
To name just a few: strengthening the immune system, the local application of essential oils in (homemade) suppositories that are effective against viruses, the TCE treatment itself (explanation follows), energetic work on issues related to the cervix, and much more. Because this sacred area, the boundary between the outside and the inside, this sacred, feminine area tells stories. Stories of neglect, of being passed over, of secret desires not to bring children into this world. Because our body is smart – it gives us what we desire, even if it happens subconsciously.
And so it was immediately clear to me – no one is going to cut into this sacred area!
This was followed by a colposcopy, a biopsy, and then the treatment. Once I knew I was carrying the virus and my cells weren't happy, I started working immediately. Suppositories, immune system strengthening, dietary changes, and energy work on myself – pranayamas (breathing techniques to direct energy), working with gemstones, visualizations – two to three hours every day. And after a few weeks, the colposcopy showed a better picture. And six months after the TCE – a treatment with trichloroacetic acid, which stimulates the body/cervix to exfoliate itself and push out what is no longer needed – the follow-up biopsy showed the result: Pap2p and no more virus. A miracle – one we can all achieve if we believe in ourselves and in traditional medicine. There is so much we can do – instead of simply reaching for the scalpel and cutting away what isn't wanted. Because our body speaks to us – and when we see why things happen, we can bring about change – even at the cellular level. Of course, it was a lot of "work." I had to look at myself, my wounds, my beliefs, and a lot of uncomfortable things – but it was worth it.
Now – almost two years later – the inflammation has almost subsided, and I'm grateful that I took this path of self-healing with Dr. Coumbos. And that I can help pass on this knowledge to other women. Because there's nothing worse than the panic you feel when you're left alone – and when you search the internet for solutions, you only find more horror stories.
